The bud scale scars (ring of small ridges) on a branch mark the start of a season’s growth.

  • Shoot-The length of branch growth in one season.
  • Scaffold limb-A large limb that forms a tree’s framework.
  • Multiple-leader trained trees usually have three to five leaders per tree. In a central-leader trained tree, only one leader is left in the center of the tree.
  • Leader-The uppermost portion of a scaffold limb.
  • Lateral branch-A side shoot off of another branch, usually at a more horizontal angle.
  • Heading (or head cut)-A pruning cut that removes only part of a branch.
  • Crown-The base of the trunk where the tree meets the soil.
  • The strongest crotch angle is 45 to 60 degrees.
  • Crotch angle-The angle formed between the trunk and a limb.
  • It contains specialized cells that seal off pruning wounds from wood rot fungi.
  • Branch collar-The raised tissue at the base of every branch.
  • Once the cordon has reached the desired length, prune the leader back to about 1.5cm (½in) each May.
  • When the cordons reach the top wire, they may be lowered to obtain more length of stem, but no more than 5 degrees at a time and to no lower than 35 degrees so that there is less risk of the stem breaking.
  • Where subsequent growth is poor, incline the tree more towards the vertical until sufficient growth has taken place.
  • Tie the cordon to a bamboo cane fixed to the wires.
  • Prune the leading shoot by one third to a suitable bud and thereafter prune in summer.
  • Trim any side shoots back to three or four buds in March to April.
  • The angle of the main stem slows the movement of sap and encourages more even growth. The root flare should be just under the surface of the soil

  • Plant the trees in well-drained soil at an angle of 45 degrees with the scion/rootstock union uppermost and 75-90cm (30in-3ft) apart.
  • If you are planting more than one row, space the rows not less than 1.8m (6ft) apart.
  • The supporting system of posts and wires is the same as for apple and pear cordons.
  • Vertical and double cordons (‘U’-shaped) can also be grown in containers (at least 45cm (18in) wide) in John Innes No 3 compost.
  • Choose a site that is open and as sunny as possible, with shelter from severe frosts that can damage blossom.
  • Container-grown plants can be planted throughout the year
  • Plant one- or two-year-old bare-rooted cordons in winter.
  • If you are growing more vigorous cultivars, double and triple cordons are a better choice of form.
